JAWOLL SILK, a fine wool and Tussah silk yarn

JAWOLL SILK by Lang Yarns combines carefully selected Corriedale wool with Tussah silk and nylon. Its blend of 55% wool, 25% nylon and 20% silk creates a fine, comfortable yarn suited to projects that will be worn regularly. The Superwash treatment also makes caring for the finished knit more convenient. This is a thoughtful choice when you want the many hours invested in a project to produce a comfortable, durable and beautifully finished piece.

Fine Corriedale wool for next-to-skin comfort

The wool used in JAWOLL SILK comes from Corriedale sheep that live outdoors throughout the year in the natural wilds of Patagonia. During shearing and sorting, only the finest areas of the fleece are selected for this yarn. The fibres have an average diameter of just 25 microns, giving the wool its soft feel and making it very comfortable to wear. That fineness is especially welcome in garments worn close to more sensitive areas such as the neck.

Corriedale wool in this quality has an average staple length of 10 cm. The sheep’s sparse food supply allows the wool to remain white, helping it take dye well and produce brilliant shades. The fibre characteristics also make the finished yarn highly resistant to pilling. This is a valuable quality for socks, jumpers and accessories that are worn often and whose surface you want to keep looking neat for longer.

The distinctive strength of wild Tussah silk

JAWOLL SILK contains Tussah silk, a wild silk obtained from the caterpillars or cocoons of free-living Japanese oak silk moths. Its thread is slightly stronger than mulberry silk. One unwound cocoon generally provides between 1,200 and 1,400 metres of silk thread. Within this balanced blend, Tussah silk complements the soft wool and supportive nylon. The result is a refined yarn that can be used for delicate stitchwork as well as pieces expected to withstand regular wear.

For socks, baby knits and lightweight garments

With 200 metres per 50 grams, JAWOLL SILK is well suited to finely worked socks, lightweight jumpers, cardigans and delicate accessories. The nylon provides useful support in projects exposed to friction, while wool and silk contribute to comfortable wear. The fine fibres also make the yarn suitable for baby clothes, toddler knits and menswear. It can be considered for hats, gloves, scarves, shawls and lightweight layers intended for any season.

The fine weight provides a clear foundation for detailed stitch patterns. Ribbing, small cables, textured motifs and carefully shaped increases or decreases can all be shown to good effect. Before beginning a garment, knit and wash a tension swatch in the same way that you plan to care for the finished piece. This will help you check your individual tension and adjust the needle size if necessary. When a project requires several balls, it is also wise to check the dye-lot information printed on the labels.

Needles, tension and care

JAWOLL SILK is designed for 2.5 to 3 mm needles. The stated tension for a 10 cm square is 30 stitches and 41 rows. Your own knitting style and the intended fabric may require a different needle size, so a swatch remains an important step. Although the yarn is Superwash treated, its wool and silk fibres still deserve gentle care. Use a detergent formulated for fine wash without fabric softener and follow the care instructions for your completed project.

  • Composition: 55% wool, 25% nylon, 20% silk, Superwash
  • Length: 200 m per 50 g
  • Recommended needles: 2.5 to 3 mm

Choose a yarn worthy of your knitting time

A carefully made project deserves a material selected with equal care. Soft Corriedale wool, strong Tussah silk and supportive nylon make JAWOLL SILK a dependable foundation for fine, comfortable pieces you will be proud to finish and wear. Choose your preferred shade and let this quality from Lang Yarns accompany the first stitch of your next project.
