BABY COTTON NATURALLY COLORED begins with organic cotton whose colour grows naturally within the fibre. This Lang Yarns yarn is not dyed after harvesting. Its pleasant feel and reduced exposure to chemicals that might irritate the skin make it particularly suitable for babies and people with sensitive skin, while its fine weight also opens the door to many carefully worked knitting projects.
Colour grown by the plant, not added in a dye bath
The fibres used for BABY COTTON NATURALLY COLORED come from cotton varieties that naturally grow in green, ivory and brown shades. Their seeds had been neglected for decades as intensive production focused on meeting demand for ecru cotton. The yarn’s different nuances are made by plying these three original colours together rather than applying colour through a later dyeing process.
As the colour is grown rather than dyed, the cotton is exposed to fewer chemicals that could potentially irritate delicate skin. Producing this yarn can also save up to 90% of the water used for conventional cotton. Its natural appearance is therefore not a surface treatment: the colour belongs to the fibre itself and reflects the way the cotton was cultivated.
A gentle choice for knits worn close to the skin
Comfort matters when you are investing many hours in a sweater, cardigan or accessory. BABY COTTON NATURALLY COLORED is especially relevant for pieces that will sit directly against the skin. If you usually test a yarn at the neck before casting on, this undyed cotton quality deserves consideration. It can be used for baby garments, fine sweaters, cardigans and delicate accessories.
With 180 metres in each 50-gram ball, the yarn is also suitable for light socks and detailed projects. The recommended 2.5 to 3 mm needle range produces a fine gauge. Before beginning, knit a swatch to see how your own tension works with stocking stitch or textured patterns and adjust your needle choice where necessary.
Technical guidance for planning your project
The stated tension is 25 stitches and 34 rows over 10 cm. This provides a practical starting point for calculating measurements, adapting a pattern and estimating the yarn required. Your personal swatch remains essential because tension will vary according to your knitting style, chosen needles and stitch pattern.

A documented story from Northeast Brazil
The story behind this cotton dates to 1992. Inspired by ethical and sustainable initiatives, Santi Mallorquí’Gou, CEO of OCC, began cultivating naturally coloured cotton fibres in Northeast Brazil. The project has since grown to include more than 400 farming families, offering economic stability to participants and their households. A further 10% of the cotton’s value is reinvested in improving production systems within the community.
Regenerative agricultural practices are central to the cultivation process. The cotton grows alongside as many as five food crops, which create a natural source of nutrients for the soil. No pesticides or machinery are used, the seeds are not genetically modified, and irrigation depends exclusively on rainwater.
Caring for naturally grown shades
Because these colours are natural, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may cause them to fade. Keep unused balls and completed projects away from direct sunlight when they are not in use. For cleaning, use a detergent intended for fine wash and take account of the needs of the pattern and finished item.
A thoughtful foundation for your knitting time
A handmade piece represents far more than its materials: it holds hours of attention in every row. BABY COTTON NATURALLY COLORED brings together organic cotton, undyed natural shades and a clearly explained origin, giving you meaningful information before you cast on. Discover this yarn at Torsades, prepare your tension swatch and choose a project that allows its naturally coloured fibres to take centre stage.
