Nova Scotia Soxx: learn to knit socks step by step

Created by Tina Baumgartner, Nova Scotia Soxx is designed as an approachable first sock project. The pattern is worked from toe to cuff, with 2x2 ribbing creating a clear, repeatable rhythm. A step-by-step YouTube video is also planned.

A clear introduction to sock knitting

The toe-up construction lets the sock take shape one section at a time. This makes the overall process easier to follow when knitting a first pair, while the regular ribbing provides a useful visual guide throughout the project.

Planned support on YouTube

The planned YouTube video will complement the written pattern step by step. Once released, beginners will be able to pause, review and repeat each stage at their own pace.

Suitable 6-ply sock yarns

Nova Scotia Soxx is suitable for the 6-ply Lang Yarns sock yarns featured in the newsletter:

Whichever yarn you choose, knit a swatch and compare it with the gauge stated in the pattern before casting on the toe. Using the right yarn weight does not replace checking your own tension.

Choose print or digital for summer

The current summer publications are available as physical editions and digital knitting instructions. You can therefore work with Nova Scotia Soxx in the format that best suits the way you knit.

Before casting on

  1. Choose a suitable 6-ply sock yarn.
  2. Knit and check a gauge swatch.
  3. Read through the full pattern before starting.
  4. Use the planned video as extra guidance once it is released.
